HOW TO HOST A CRAFT NIGHT

Five things you need for a very good evening of making things with friends.

Dinner party? Lovely. Drinks? Always an option. But there’s something particularly satisfying about getting a few people around a table and actually making something together.

A craft night is pleasingly simple: choose something to make, invite some people you like and accept in advance that nobody’s finished result will look quite like the picture.

Here’s how to do it.

1. PICK SOMETHING YOU CAN TALK THROUGH

This is not the evening to attempt your first hand-knitted Fair Isle jumper.

Choose something easy enough that conversation can continue while your hands are busy. Crochet keychains, drawing, colouring, collage or making cards all work nicely. Put a few different options on the table and let everyone find their thing.

Sunri's Quick Crochet Kits are made for exactly this kind of evening: everything you need is in the box, the projects take around one to three-and-a-half hours, and a slightly wonky first attempt only adds character.

2. PUT EVERYTHING ON THE TABLE

Half the pleasure of making something is the stuff you make it with.

Markers. Pencils. Paper. Yarn. Scissors. A pile of colourful things in the middle of the table has a strange ability to make everyone want to join in.

Don't worry about making it look perfect. This is one occasion where a messy table is a sign that things are going rather well.

3. CHOOSE FOOD THAT REQUIRES ONE HAND

An underrated craft-night consideration.

Think olives, crisps, grapes, popcorn, cookies and other things that can make the journey from bowl to mouth without requiring cutlery, assembly or too much concentration.

And perhaps keep the hummus at a safe distance from the yarn.

Your crochet will thank you.

4. SET THE ROOM, NOT A THEME

You do not need matching napkins, handcrafted invitations or an elaborate tablescape entitled Autumn Crafting Evening.

Put on a playlist. Make the light comfortable. Light a candle or choose a scent you like. Put drinks within reach.

Done.

The idea is to create a room people want to stay in, not another thing you have to prepare for three hours.

5. LET WONKY WIN

Someone will misunderstand the instructions. Someone will get distracted halfway through. Someone's crochet aubergine may end up looking suspiciously like a potato.

Excellent.

A craft night isn't really about producing six perfect objects. It's about sitting around a table, talking, laughing and doing something with your hands for a few hours.

No notifications to keep up with. No reason to be productive. And definitely no need to turn your new hobby into a side hustle.

Just make something.

Preferably with people you like.
